MASTER SFX ARTIST USES PEEL 3D SCANNER FOR ACTOR HEAD TATTOOS
LA-based Rod Maxwell knows his special effects—and the special effects they give to blockbuster movies. SFX artist by trade, Rod was mandated by a film crew to create head tattoos for characters in an upcoming and highly anticipated new movie.
Rod used the Peel 2-S, Zbrush and Anycubic’s resin printers to create the head tattoos. “Scanning speed and flexibility-on-the-fly is why I used Peel’s 3D scanner.
Rod Maxwell leverages his Peel 3D scanner to design sophisticated head tattoos for an upcoming blockbuster.
ZBrush is my workhorse for sculpting and mold making. And Anycubic’s resin printers were so fast and inexpensive, we were able to have several 3d printers farming prints for use on set overnight,” Rod explained.
A digital workflow made generating stencils for all of the character’s stunt doubles fast and efficient, all while under the pressures of an ever-changing production environment. Both the scanner and software were very forgiving: Rod could see the results of his scans immediately and improve the resolutions even further afterwards. Smooth surfaces like shiny shaved heads can sometimes be tricky; although target dots were unnecessary, they guaranteed a speedy trouble-free 3D capture.

Contact our peel 3d expertsAfter 3D scanning and a unique stenciling process, Rod 3D printed the actor’s head tattoo to be able to airbrush it on the actor’s head.
Rod scanned the actor’s head with his peel 2-S . He then imported it into Zbrush, projected the original tattoo pattern he generated for the head scan directly onto the actor’s head, and extracted and built the stencils. Rod 3D printed the stencils on resin printers. He engineered the stencils to be layered in sections for easier application. Rod was able to airbrush the iconic head tattoo onto the actor's head with her assistance in under 45 minutes.
Rod found learning how to use his peel 3d scanner very easy, indicating that the learning curve was short. He’s excited to incorporate the scanner into other production workflows. “We now have more options on how to capture people and props, archive works and more,” he added.
The entire peel 3d team is excited to see Rod’s work on the silver screen!
